The Nairobi Convention is part of UNEP’s Regional Seas Programme which aims to address the accelerating degradation of the world’s oceans and coastal areas through the sustainable management and use of the marine and coastal environment.
The Nairobi Convention Secretariat, through the Project entitled ‘Implementation of the Strategic Action Programme for the protection of the Western Indian Ocean from land-based sources and activities’ (WIO-SAP), has commissioned the Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre for Africa (MTCC Africa) & the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR, South Africa) in collaboration with Macquarie University and Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) to undertake a programme, in consultation with regional port partners and other stakeholders, aimed at advancing sustainable port development in the region.
The role of MTCC-Africa in this collaboration is to act as a stakeholder mobiliser in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region.
