Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender equality

Women in maritime world over ought to be centre stage in support of the IMO responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. IMO’s work supports the UN sustainable development goals. These goals are inclusive of sustainable development leading to gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls. In support of this, MTCC Africa and the GMN organised the first MTCC Africa Role of Women in decarbonization webinar where women in maritime in the region highlighted the technical roles they play in decarbonization. This event enabled MTCC Africa to forge partnerships with IMO recognized Women Associations in the region with an aim to promote inclusivity of women in climate change mitigation.

During the UN System’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence activities, under the 2020 global theme: “Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!”, the Association for women in the maritime sector in Eastern and Southern Africa (WOMESA) organized a webinar on gender-based violence and the effects of COVID-19 on the maritime sector. MTCC Africa supported this by co-hosting the event.
