Sri Lanka National Technology Demonstration and Training Workshop

The Sri Lanka National Technology Demonstration and Training Workshop, held under the IMO–Norad TEST Biofouling Project, brought together national maritime stakeholders for a combined programme of technical training and practical technology demonstration aimed at strengthening biofouling management capacity in Sri Lanka. The activity was co-organized by MTCC Africa andthe IMO TEST Biofouling Project Coordination Unit (PCU) and hosted by the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) of Sri Lanka with the support of international technical experts and technology providers.

Throughout the four-day workshop, participants received specialized training on biofouling risk assessment, in-water inspection methodologies, and in-water cleaning (IWC) considerations and guidance, enhancing their technical understanding and supporting informed decision-making in vessel biofouling management. The programme combined technical presentations, interactive discussions, practical exercises, and case-based learning aligned with the IMO Biofouling Guidelines, fostering valuable knowledge exchange among regulators, port authorities, industry representatives, and other maritime stakeholders.

A key highlight of the workshop was the live practical technology demonstration showcasing the use of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) for in-water vessel inspections. Conducted at Colombo Dockyard PLC within the Port of Colombo, the demonstration enabled participants to observe real-world inspection procedures, including the assessment of niche areas, interpretation of biofouling ratings, and the use of digital inspection and reporting tools. The practical session successfully bridged the gap between policy, technical training, and operational application, equipping participants with practical insights into the role of innovative technologies in supporting effective biofouling management.
