MTCC Africa completed its 2nd Pilot Project on Fuel Consumption and Emissions Data Collection and Reporting. The study aimed to quantify the impact of greenhouse gases from the shipping industry in selected ports and waterways in the African region through various means including equipping selected ships with on-board tablets (Thorium-X Tablets) to provide real-time fuel consumption data.
MTCC Africa partnered with various shipping lines, maritime administrations and port authorities to identify suitable ships to take part in this study. One of these partners was the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) which was provided with a Thorium-X tablet to fit in a vessel plying their coastal waters.
A delegation from NIMASA that included the Deputy Director and Assistant Director for the Marine Environment Management (MEM) Department at NIMASA, Dr Oma Ofodile and Mr Kabiru Bello respectively, visited MTCC Africa on the 21st and 22nd of September 2022 to explore further avenues of collaboration as well as handover the Thorium-X tablet previously used for the MTCC Africa 2nd Pilot Project. This two-day exercise saw the NIMASA representatives visit the MTCC Africa Consortium members i.e. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Mombasa Campus which hosts the MTCC Africa Headquarter Offices, the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) HQ offices and the Kenya Port Authority (KPA) Mombasa Offices. This visit gave an opportunity for the NIMASA representatives to exchange best practices with the KMA and KPA.
The NIMASA delegation was also keen to understand how the MTCC Africa 1st Pilot Project on Uptake of Port Energy Efficient Technologies and Operations was conducted, including practical applications of the energy-efficient programs being implemented at the KPA Mombasa Port as part of recommendations from the MTCC Africa 1st Pilot Project Report.
