Focal Point Countries Meeting March 2019

In order to execute its mandate, MTCC-Africa has established and maintains liaison with focal point countries from the North (Suez / Mediterranean), West (Atlantic), Central (Landlocked Countries), South African, East (Indian Ocean) and Small Islands States. Activities in each region and follow-up is done in close collaboration with the focal point country. In line with its mandate, MTCC Africa successfully hosted its focal point countries meeting in Mombasa, Kenya on the 14th & 15th of March 2019.

The various institutions represented included Port Management Association of Eastern and Southern Africa (PMAESA), South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), Nigerian Federal Ministry of Transportation, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Ghana Shippers Authority, Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology (JKUAT).

During the meeting, MTCC Africa trained participants on using the Thorium X tablets for fuel consumption data collection & reporting (Pilot Project 2) and consequently handed over two (2) tablets to SAMSA & one (1) to NIMASA to be provided to ships passing through their waters. An MOU between SAMSA & MTCC Africa was also signed by Mr. Sobantu Tilayi, Chief Operating officer SAMSA & Dr. Robert Kiplimo, Director MTCC Africa on the 14th on engagement as a focal point representing the Southern African Region in the framework of capacity building for climate change mitigation in the maritime shipping industry project. Among other agenda items, MTCC Africa also sought further collaboration and endorsement of a strategy to reach out to the rest of the African countries.
